I came to the USA in 1998 to work in Information Technology. I was shy, a technical person who only spoke when he was spoken to. English is my second language and I was lacking effective communication with my co-workers. Nothing changed for the next 2 years until I joined Alltel Orators, now known as All Choice Orators in 2001. Within 6 months, there was a radical change in my communication skills simply by participating in Toastmasters meetings.
Initially, I was fearful of Table Topics. To avoid participation in Table Topics, I signed up as a speaker as often as I could. No wonder, I achieved my CTM in 6 months. I am happy to say I improved not only my communication skills, but my confidence increased too. This was due in part to the support I received from my fellow Toastmasters. Eventually, I started to volunteer for Table Topics and I was noticed at work for the improvement in my ability to communicate.
As I worked in various officer roles, I progressed to become a team leader at work. By the time I became club president, I had moved into management. The growth in my career (Manager, Sr. Manager) has been in tandem with my leadership role in Toastmasters (Area, Division Governor).
Our district needs strategic change in the way it serves its members. With my experience at Alltel, ranked #1 in customer satisfaction in the telecom industry last year, coupled with my experience as a member and leader in the district, I promise to bring the same exponential growth and success to the Toastmasters in District 14.
My goal is to win your confidence in me over the next several weeks as I share my vision, strategy and plan to achieve the President Distinguished status for the District in Toastmasters International. I am passionate about district 14's success and believe that you feel the same way.
